Limescale is a hard mineral deposit that builds up inside any appliance that uses water — and your bidet shower toilet is particularly susceptible. Over time, calcium and magnesium from your water supply coat the internal nozzles, pipes, and pump of your toilet, gradually reducing water flow, weakening the cleansing spray, and creating conditions where bacteria can thrive.
Regular descaling with the official Hygea Durgol descaling solution keeps your shower toilet running at full performance, protects internal components, and ensures every wash is as hygienic as the day the toilet was installed. It is the only bidet toilet descaler approved for use with Hygea shower toilets — using a third-party product risks damage to seals and internal mechanisms, and may invalidate your manufacturer’s warranty.
This electronic bidet descaler is suitable for use with any bidet toilet that features a built-in automatic descaling or decalcification program, including:
The frequency of descaling depends on the hardness of your local water supply. Hard water contains higher concentrations of dissolved calcium and magnesium — the minerals that form limescale. Much of England, particularly London, the South East, and East Anglia, has very hard water, meaning limescale builds up quickly and more frequent descaling is essential.
Use the UK water hardness guide below to find the recommended descaling frequency for your area:
| Water Hardness | Descale Every | Typical UK Regions |
|---|---|---|
| Soft (0–100 mg/l) | Every 12 months | Scotland, Wales, North West England |
| Moderately Hard (100–200 mg/l) | Every 6 months | Midlands, Yorkshire, North East England |
| Hard (200–300 mg/l) | Every 3–4 months | South East, East Anglia, East Midlands |
| Very Hard (300+ mg/l) | Every 2–3 months | London, Essex, Kent, Hertfordshire |
To check your exact water hardness, search your postcode on your local water supplier’s website — most UK suppliers publish this data online.
Your Hygea shower toilet features a fully automatic descaling program. The complete cycle takes approximately 55 minutes and runs automatically once activated. Here is a summary of the steps:

No. The Hygea automatic descaling program is specifically calibrated for the official Hygea Durgol descaling liquid. Using a third-party or generic descaler risks damage to the internal pump, nozzles, and seals, and will likely void your manufacturer’s warranty. Always use the genuine Durgol product.
The complete automatic descaling cycle takes approximately 55 minutes in total — around 42 minutes for the main descaling phase, followed by a 10–11 minute secondary rinse cycle. The toilet returns to its normal settings automatically when the program is complete.
Your Hygea shower toilet has a built-in limescale alarm — a flashing red and blue LED indicates that descaling is due. You may also notice a weaker or uneven cleansing spray, or increased noise from the internal pump. We also recommend proactive descaling based on your local water hardness (see the frequency guide above) even before the alarm triggers.
Yes. The used descaling solution is heavily diluted inside the unit during the automatic cycle. The residual liquid can be safely disposed of down a household drain. The product is not classified as hazardous waste at normal use concentrations. Empty bottles should be rinsed and recycled with your plastic waste.
We also stock the dedicated Durgol descaling agents for Geberit AquaClean and VitrA V-Care shower toilets. While Durgol is the manufacturer of the descaling liquids for all these brands, each formulation may be calibrated differently. We recommend using the descaler specifically listed for your toilet model.. Please call us on 01442 843746 if you are unsure which product is right for your toilet.
